Copenhagen Redux

Scenario: Design Museum closed on Wednesday, fatigue setting in, leg complaining miserably. Seeing as I'm returning in December, I decided to take advantage of the bright, blue day by making mini-forrays in the immediate vicinity of my hotel. Most notable was the canal boat tour. The guide book had advised that there are two tour boat companies. They do the same tour, but one charges $5 and the other, $10. That was a no-brainer for me in $$$ Copenhagen. Some of the more interesting sights included brightly painted houses along the canal, a light"house" boat, and a warehouse near the royal castle with faux castle facades on two sides.

I picked up dinner to go at ChiliMillys, which for some bizarre reason I can't avoid calling MilliVanilli. The Danish chain sees itself as a healthy alternative to fast food. For just under $10 I ordered 2 salads, which came with a roll and taziki sauce. I ended up with a massive pile of chicken dill salad and roast eggplant with peppers. Seriously, I ate from it twice and couldn't finish half. When I return, I'll have the $5 1-salad special.

I returned to my hotel, which promises "sleep cheap in luxury." The sleeping part is debatable, and the hotel is new, but I would have to quibble with the "cheap" and "luxury" parts. You've seen pictures of the room. At 5'4" I fit end-to-end on the bunk (but I did enjoy sleeping under the duvet). The bathroom/shower combo was even smaller, and it came with 3 slivers of soap, 1 x 3 x 1/4". When I turned on the dribbling showerhead mounted on the ceiling and pulled the curtain in a tight circle around me, it took a full 5 minutes for the water to reach my feet.

All that said, the location was great, and at close to $100 a night for the economy room, it likely was the most affordable hotel in the city. I should also add that the $10 cold breakfast buffet had the best yogurt(banana-pear) I've ever eater--and I don't even like bananas. So before I left--surprise!--I made reservations for December.

I am now settling in to Leicester. More updates will follow next week. I hope my internet situation will improve soon. The place where I'm staying should get broadband in the next 10 days or so, and I need to somehow get a new converter. In the meantime, please send me an e-mail. I'd love to hear from you.

PS The posted gas prices in Copenhagen were right around $2. That is per liter, however, so multiple that by 4 to get some real sticker shock, if you're reading this in the States.
