Weekend in Leicester (say "Lester")

I awoke to a sun-filled room on Saturday morning. Sue, my local host, offered to show me around. We set off on foot, first visiting the neighborhood shops--grocery, greengrocer (veg), butcher, used books, and so on. We walked past the university to the city center, marked by a bell tower on the central square. The streets were clogged with shoppers enjoying the lovely autumn day. We stopped at a cafe (pronounced "caf" here) for a sandwich. I ordered a BLT, which turned out to be same but different. The bacon was cured but not fried crispy, and the bread was whole-grain but not toasted. My big mission in town was to try to find a replacement voltage converter so I could use my laptop again. Adaptor plugs were easy to find, but not the item I needed. We finally stumbled upon an old-fashioned electronics/repair store, and the man there quickly replaced the fuse. For around $2, I was back in business.

Friday evening Sue asked if I had brought a "bathing costume." I had not. She offered to loan me one and bring me for a swim at her club when we finished shopping. My knee was not up to it, so I begged off. I stopped to do a bit of grocery shopping on the way home. I suspect we walked over 6 miles.

Today the weather is gloomy again, and I "knee-d" to take it easy. I've had an e-consult with Tom's cousin John, the family's go-to doctor. (Thanks, John.) This is not a new injury, but something that pops up every so often--sometimes years apart--as a result of knee surgery I had when I was 23. Of course it would choose to act up now when I have so much walking, stair climbing, and lugging to do. (Fortunately, I'm staying put in Leicester for the month, so I won't have to haul the bag again any time soon.)

I'm sitting in the rocker in front of the sliding-glass doors--see photos below--enjoying a cup of Earl Grey tea. One of my chores today will be to sort all my receipts. I'm looking forward to an Indian "ready-made" meal for lunch. If the weather improves, I may hobble to Sainbury's (grocery store), but it isn't looking likely.
